Need a fast, reliable fix for connecting wood joists to steel beams? Here are five proven methods—each sharp and to the point. And yes, pros swear by method #3.
How it works: Cut a 2× (or better, 3×) piece of lumber to match the flange width.
Attach it to the top flange of the steel beam using a powder-actuated nailer or bolts. Then, install top-mount joist hangers to support the joists.
Why it flies: Fast setup, minimal welding or drilling. The nailer acts as a buffer and attachment point.
Note: Use blocking or straps to resist twisting if needed.
How it works: Bolt a ripped wood nailer directly to the top flange or web of the beam (24" on center is common). Then hang your joists with standard joist hangers.
