Viral Olympic Breakdancer Raygun Responds To Backlash: “It Has Frankly Been Pretty Devastating”

2024/08/16 Report

Rachael Gunn, widely known as Raygun, has been at the center of controversy following her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, which ended in a zero score. In a recent video posted on Instagram, Raygun addressed the intense backlash she has faced since her performance went viral, expressing that the response has been "devastating."

The Backlash

Raygun’s routine, which was intended to showcase her skills and bring joy to audiences, has instead sparked a wave of criticism and ridicule. The dancer’s performance has been widely mocked online, with comedians like Jimmy Fallon incorporating it into their routines. However, the criticism has not been limited to jokes and memes. A Change.org petition, which has garnered over 55,000 signatures, accuses Raygun of manipulating the Olympic selection process to her advantage, alleging that she used her influence to secure a spot over more deserving competitors.

This petition has also leveled accusations against Anna Meares, the chief of the Australian Olympic Mission (AOC), alleging misleading conduct regarding the selection process.

Raygun’s Response

In her video statement, Raygun responded to the allegations with a mix of frustration and gratitude.
